We’ve been thrilled by the powerful media spotlight that has been shone on SAVE’s fight to stop M&S demolishing its flagship Oxford Street building. The Daily Mail sent a reporter to cover the inquiry's opening day, while the Guardian ran two news stories and a column by Simon Jenkins who wrote: “M&S is a shining example of how not to treat the high street – or the planet”. Columnist Catherine Bennett took up the cudgels in the Observer, noting: “Razing your architectural gem is a funny way to show a love for heritage, M&S”. Architect Michelle Ludik wrote in the Evening Standard it was “easy to see why the demolition of a prominent and longstanding building in central London has become a matter of national interest”. Ahead of the inquiry, the Architects’ Journal ran a feature headlined: “Demolition in the dock: Why the M&S Oxford St public inquiry really matters” and an investigation into whether developers’ whole-life carbon assessments are mere greenwash. They also published a column by Westminster councillor Jessica Toale, who supported SAVE at the inquiry, urging M&S to think again. Other titles to cover SAVE’s case included Private Eye, the Telegraph, City AM, Building, Building Design, Retail Gazette, The Grocer and The Ecologist, plus SAVE director Henrietta Billings was interviewed by BBC Radio London.
