SAVE seeks new paid intern!

SAVE event at Trinity Buoy Wharf
Attendees at a SAVE event at Trinity Buoy Wharf, London

Get hands-on and in-depth experience of the heritage sector and national campaigning for historic buildings with a part time paid internship at SAVE Britain’s Heritage.

This is a rare opportunity to take up a paid work experience role in the sector and it is for anyone who has not had a paid position in a heritage job before but who intends to seek a career in the sector. We welcome applications from all suitable candidates regardless of gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, socio-economic backgrounds and beliefs.

It is an exciting and busy time to join us, in the middle of a range of special events and activities to mark our 50th year.  Working with our Conservation Officer, you will gain experience of heritage advocacy, including commenting on planning applications and assisting in research and analysis for current campaigns. You will work with our Buildings at Risk Officer on our national buildings at risk register and you will also support our Editorial and Communications Manager and Creative Producer on our 50th Anniversary Programme, social media and publications and our Events Manager with our events.

Previous interns have gone on to jobs in Amenity Societies, heritage consultancy and building surveying.  Commenting on the kind of experience you can expect, our current intern, Eve, says:

"The internship at SAVE is extraordinary – I’d say there’s a lot of learning on the job, so you’re given very exciting work straight off the bat. The SAVE team have been wonderful – I do not have a background in historic buildings, and they have been unbelievably kind, supportive, and patient as I’ve learnt a huge amount in a very short space of time! Over the course of the internship, I’ve been able to manage smaller cases, to write articles and press releases, and to help with a whole host of other projects, particularly around the 50th anniversary. I am exceptionally grateful for my time here, and cannot recommend the internship enough."

Internship:  Six months 1st September 2025 to 28 February 2026 OR 1st March 2026 to 31st August 2026. We are looking for one intern for each period

Part-time:  Four days a week, 32 hours a week

Location: Clerkenwell, central London with some flexible home working

Salary:  £27, 008 pro rata plus pension contribution

Whether you have recently completed your studies or are looking to change careers, you will have a genuine enthusiasm for historic architecture as well as a general understanding of how the planning system can protect it.  With support from our small, friendly and collaborative team, you’ll work independently, take ownership of tasks and deliver to tight deadlines.  The work is varied, busy and requires flexibility. Communication, across all forms of media, is at the heart of what we do and you will need to be ready to pick up this skill quickly. You will either be a graduate in planning, architectural history, history, architecture, law or other related discipline or have gained professional experience in a sector outside the Historic Built Environment.

For more information or an informal chat about the role, please contact Liz Fuller, Buildings at Risk Officer, at: [email protected].

To apply, please send (1) your CV and (2) a covering letter setting out why you would like this position with SAVE, how you qualify and which internship you are applying for (Sept 2025 – Feb 2026 or Mar 2026 - Sept 2026) to Leigh Stanford at: [email protected]

The closing date for applications is Monday 7 July. Interviews will take place on Thursday 10 July at our offices.
