We are shocked by the devasting fire that broke out yesterday at Medlock Mill. Also known as Hotspur Press, it dated back to 1801, and was one of Manchester's oldest surviving historic mill buildings.

Vacant and derelict for many years, the developer, Manner, had received approval in May 2024 for controversial plans by architect Hodder + Partners which would have seen a 37-storey student tower built through the middle of the mill. In recognition of its importance and links to the city and its residents, the building was recommended for listing by Historic England but in a highly unusual move, this advice was rejected by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Lisa Nandy, and listing refused in January 2025.

SAVE, and other national heritage organisations had challenged the minister's decision, on the grounds that Historic England’s detailed advice to ministers (who ultimately make the decision on listings) found that Medlock Mills was an extremely significant historic spinning mill in Manchester and included remnants of early mill technology. The review of the decision not to list was underway. In March 2025, Manner submitted minor design revisions to its student tower scheme.

The fire was reportedly so severe people in neighbouring flats were evacuated, and train services disrupted. Thankfully, there are no reports of any injuries. We are awaiting news from the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service regarding the cause of the fire.
