Unpromising though “Chimney at manure and vitriol works” sounds, this site and its Grade II listed (LEN: 1105867) chimney are fascinating and intimately connected with hundreds of years of industry and production in this West Devon town. The chimney is surrounded by a collection of old industrial sheds of varying construction but several built in stone with corrugated iron roofs. None of the other structures are listed but the site is located in a conservation area and an attempt to demolish them was defeated in 2022.
Nearby stands the Grade II listed Town Mill which dates from the early 18th century but the site is thought to have been included in the Doomsday Book and the site of milling since the Middle Ages.
The chimney and its associated buildings appear not to have any current proposals for their repair and are looking in poor condition and the land surrounding them is overgrown. The site itself is on the banks of the river East Okement near to a footbridge as well as a road bridge and could provide a location for light industrial or other workshops in a very pleasant setting.
