PRESENTATION OF CASE TO SAVE SMITHFIELD GENERAL MARKET

Please join us on 20th January at 18.30 for a presentation of our case for saving Smithfield General Market, in advance of the Public Inquiry into the scheme from Henderson Global Investors to demolish most of the market that commences on February 11th in the Guildhall.

SAVE Britain's Heritage and the Victorian Society, represented by solicitor David Cooper, are presenting a strong and robust case that covers the architectural merits of the buildings, the viability of bringing them back into use and the paucity of the Henderson scheme both in terms of design and sustainability.

SAVE and the Victorian Society have made their own planning application to bring the site back into use, presently under consideration with the City of London. A press release about the planning application is attached.

SAVE and the Victorian Society invite you to come along and hear the key witnesses presenting our case.
These include:

Architectural historian Dr Jenny Freeman,
Founding Director of Urban Space Management Eric Reynolds, who has brought Camden Market, Spitalfields and many other markets back into use,
Architect John Burrell,
Property expert Ian Lerner, and others.

We will present the key points in our case, including our planning application. There will be an opportunity to look at the plans and drawings of our planning application and to support the scheme.

SAVE President Marcus Binney says: "Henderson's proposed gutting of Smithfield General Market will be the worst mutilation of a Victorian landmark in 30 years. Eric Reynolds' offer shows there is no commercial necessity for this destruction, and that refurbishment is a viable alternative."
