1st Tour of Charles Holden’s 55 Broadway

07/02/2025
Tickets from £15.00

Join SAVE Britain's Heritage on a special tour of London’s first skyscraper led by Edmund Bird, Heritage Advisor for Transport for London. This grade I listed building was designed by Charles Holden and became the headquarters of London Transport in 1929. Reaching up to 14 storeys, this is a unique opportunity to see a stunning Art Deco building as well as get a sweeping view of London’s skyline*, before its ongoing transformation into a 520-room luxury hotel with conference and leisure facilities. The tour will follow a short presentation on the architectural history of TfL's Underground.

Edmund Bird has been the Heritage Advisor for Transport for London since 2006, with nearly 30 years of experience in town planning and building conservation. He previously led conservation teams in Lambeth and Camden and has written five books on Lambeth's architectural history, including Lambeth's Victorian Architecture, Lamberth’s Edwardian Splendours, Lambeth Architecture 1914-1939, Lambeth Architecture: A Brave New World 1945-65 and Lambeth Architecture 1965-99.

*Please note that parts of the building are currently in use as conference spaces, so some areas may be inaccessible due to works or last-minute event bookings. Spaces are strictly limited, so advance booking is essential.

Railway Children care for orphans and other homeless children who live in and around railway stations in India and East Africa.
