Join SAVE and Philip Reddaway for a special tour of St Anne’s Church, Limehouse, one of themasterpieces of architect Nicholas Hawksmoor. Consecrated in 1730, St Anne’s is one of six churches he designed in London, showcasing his distinctive take on classical architecture.

This tour will explore the church’s striking exterior—featuring bold stonework and a towering lantern—as well as its impressive interior, including the magnificent ceiling, original Hawksmoor paneling, and the ongoing renovation project set to continue until 2030. Along the way, we’ll also learn about the history of Limehouse itself, from its maritime and industrial past to the changes that have shaped the neighborhood over time.

We’ll also delve into the church’s rich history, from surviving the devastating fire of 1850 to its role as an air raid shelter during the Blitz. Rare WWII-era features, such as sick bay signs and rudimentary toilet facilities, remain in an unrenovated section of the crypt, which will be open for this tour before restoration work begins. While much of the crypt is now used for storage, it remains a fascinating space for those interested in urban exploration.

Additionally, this tour offers a final opportunity to view the Hawksmoor6 exhibition, showcasing Hélène Binet’s photographs of Hawksmoor’s churches and capturing the architectural beauty of St Anne’s from a fresh perspective.

This is a rare opportunity to explore the history and architectural significance of this remarkable church, with the chance to see the crypt before renovations begin.
