Building of the Month March 2019: The Old Dukes Head, Stoke Ferry, Norfolk

Standing in the centre of this ancient and pretty village near King’s Lynn, this is a former public house of some history.  The Old Dukes Head was an inn in the town since at least Georgian times and the present buildings are likely to date from then at least in part.  More recently it became the social club for the nearby agricutural feed mill but it closed in the 1990s and has been empty ever since.

It now stands boarded up and and disused on a good sized site with land to the rear.  It has been for sale for £275,000 and at risk of redevelopment despite standing in prominent location in the conservation area.  It would surely be a shame to lose such a link to the history of the village especially where the square on which the former public house stands has no building later than the mid 19th century.
