Appeal for help as SAVE begins its search for the 2010-11 Buildings at Risk Catalogue

SAVE is researching for next year’s Building at Risk register and we would like your help!

We are interested in hearing about Grade II listed and/or unlisted vacant buildings of historical or architectural note, which are at risk from dereliction/decay/vandalism and in need of a new use and users (they don’t necessarily need to be for sale). We also want to hear about Grade I and II* listed buildings at risk, which are vacant and for sale. Please do get in touch about suitable buildings you may have seen in your local area or on travels throughout England and Wales.

Buildings will be featured online and around 100 new entries will be chosen for inclusion in our annual catalogue with the aim of inspiring and empowering people to take a more active role in protecting and cherishing their historic environment.

A good photograph is worth a thousand words and we cannot feature a building in the catalogue without one. So please send us your pictures (300 dpi minimum) if you can along with your suggestions to rhiannon.tracy@savebritainsheritage.org (works Monday-Wednesday).

The deadline for suggestions is early January.

About the images:

The Merchant’s House, Shepton Mallet (also known as 8 Market Place). This 17th century house had fallen on hard times when it was added to the register in 2001. It had been empty for many years and its condition, structurally, was very poor. 1960s development had cut the building off from the high street. Grants from English Heritage and the Local Authority enabled the owner to commence a very careful restoration which has brought the building back into residential use. The project has in the last year won the RICS SW award and was more recently the winner for the Conservation/Restoration category in the 2009 Wood Awards.
