Status: Grade II
Planning Authority: South Somerset District Council
Grade II listed and dating from the mid-nineteenth century, the Malthouse is a coursed limestone rubble and slate building whose sheer size is all the more noticeable due to the abundance of open land surrounding it, also part of the sale particulars.
The Malthouse is a very complete survival of a type of agricultural building which dates back more than 500 years. Such buildings were used for storing and curing grain, usually barley, in order to produce malt, a prime ingredient in the production of beer and whisky, but also used in the food industry. The lack of soot within the kiln and the lack of wear on the growing floors however, suggest that the Malthouse was not used for this purpose, instead being used for agricultural storage.
Although largely complete in its original design and function, the Malthouse is suffering from a long term lack of maintenance, which has resulted in some structural instability. An owner willing to invest in the future of the Malthouse is therefore needed.
With planning permission for mixed use conversion to turn the Malthouse into a combination of holiday cottages, storage and residential properties, this opportunity is too good to miss!
