A SAVE report on focusing on the plight of urban schools in England and Wales. It contains essays from leading figures in the world and includes over100 illustrated pages on schools, giving particular emphasis to those which are either under threat or have been converted to new use. BEAUTY OR THE BULLDOZER £2 (£1.80) 

SAVE's proposals for the Peninsular Barracks, Winchester, drawn up by Huw Thomas, which has saved the Victorian Barracks from demolition. The site has now been bought for a housing and public spaces scheme which should become a template for other sites. A follow-up to Deserted Bastions. Published March 1994.

BLINK AND YOU'LL MISS IT - NORTHERN IRELAND'S HERITAGE IN DANGER £3 (£2.40)

SAVE's hard hitting investigation into the state of conservation in Northern Ireland is now available. The main problems facing the built environment are highlighted, including the scandalous rate of delisting, a lack of resources and an abject lack of enforcement action. Other areas covered importantly include the destruction of vernacular buildings. 30 recommendations are made with the aim of encouraging thorough reform of the Province's conservation system. CAPITAL OPPORTUNITIES £10 (£8)

A catalogue of listed buildings at risk in greater London which are in need of restoration. They include many Georgian terraced houses ideal for homes

and offices. More obscure examples are an 18th century castle in Greenwich and a 20th century airport terminal in Croydon. Published July 1991.

CHURCHES: A QUESTION OF CONVERSION £9. 95 (£8) 

An extensive illustrated (colour and b/w) book showing new uses for churches ranging from offices and housing to theatres and restaurants. The emphasis is on schemes which respect the character and integrity of the churches. Published September 1987.

CITY CENTRE CARVE-UP £2 (£1. 60)

Alarmingly, in a large number of cities the clean sweep approach is making a comeback: the report looks at Leeds, Liverpool and Newcastle. Published May 1982.

THE CONCRETE JERUSALEM: THE FAILURE OF THE CLEAN SWEEP 50p(40p)

Published in New Society Magazine 23/30 December 1976. The report took a critical look at post-war developments - Portsmouth, Liverpool University and London's Victoria Street.

CRISIS AT SALTAIRE £2. 50 (£2) 

The vast mill at the centre of Saltaire, the outstanding planned village near Bradford, ceased to be used for its original purpose. This report outlines possible uses for the complex. Published August 1986.

CUTTING THE HEART OUT OF DERBY £3 (£2. 40)

Despite this report arguing for the historic station as a vital part of the railway conservation area, Derby Station was demolished in 1984.

ELYSIAN GARDENS: A STRATEGY FOR THEIR SURVIVAL £4 (£3. 20)

Coincided with the V&A exhibition "The Garden " in May 1979. It examined the need for protection of historic gardens, illustrating some famous gardens which have been lost and putting forward proposals for tackling the problems of maintaining great gardens.

SAVE's third report of country houses at risk, this beautifully illustrated publication documents over 60 of the nation's country houses, threatened by decay and neglect. Published August 1985.


ENOUGH HAS BEEN BULLDOZED! SAVE FARNBOROUGH, THE CRADLE OF BRITISH AVIATION £5 (£4)

A lightning publication from SAVE, with the aim of raising awareness of the importance of Farnborough to the nation's history. It looks at the remarkable collection of buildings that make up what remains of the former Royal Aircraft Establishment site at Farnborough and suggests new uses for the buildings and the site. Published December 2001/January 2002.

A FUTURE FOR FARM BUILDINGS £5 (£4)

Illustrated in colour and b/w, this book gives imaginative ideas of how to re-use farm buildings no longer required by modern farming. As well as giving guidelines as to how to convert sensitively, the book gives information about the grants available. Published September 1988.

GRAND IDEAS FOR THE NATION'S HERITAGE £3 (£2.40)

Published to mark SAVE's 25th anniversary, this report sets out a blueprint for future conservation policy in the UK. It contains 25 initiatives aimed at strengthening protection, improving and broadening education and encouraging regular maintenance and swift repair, rather than last ditch rescue, as the most sustainable conservation strategy. MIND OVER MATTER £12. 95 (£10. 36)

The first comprehensive study to look at the position of Britain's mental hospitals. These attractive and imposing Victorian buildings, carefully designed with extensive landscaped grounds, are now facing an uncertain future. By the year 2000AD, 98 out of a total of 121 large mental hospitals (open in 1986) will have closed. The report illustrates 112 cases and calls for proper planning regulations to be brought in to prevent the loss of both buildings and grounds to over-development. Published October 1995.

SAVE SEVERALLS: AN ARTS AND CRAFTS VILLAGE FOR LIVING AND LEARNING £4 (3.20p)

This new, fully illustrated report looks at the situation faced by Severalls hospital and parkland. The booklet covers the beautiful and unique architecture of the wards and other site buildings, and the mature and spacious parkland. The booklet also outlines an alternative scheme that would maintain most of the buildings and parklands, and keep development to a minimum.

SILENCE IN COURT - The Future of the UK's Historic Law Courts

SAVE's long awaited book on historic law courts is finally in print, with over 170 photographs, many previously unpublished, of the UK's historic courts - a remarkable group of buildings. The report looks at the problems faced by the buildings across the UK (with the PFI route of procurement being at the fore), as well as at those that have been successfully refurbished to meet modern expectations.
