approach is making a comeback: the report looks at Leeds, Liverpool and

The report took a critical look at post-war developments - Portsmouth,

DEAR MR HESELTINE £1 (80p)Comments on proposals for setting up a new commission
for historic buildings. (English Heritage was established in 1984). Published
February 1982.

DROWNING IN VAT £2 (£1. 60)Before the 1984 budget, VAT was charged on repairs, but
not on new work done to existing buildings, creating an incentive to alter
rather than repair. Although VAT is now charged on alterations, there is
still the anomaly of new construction remaining exempt. Published March
1980.

ELYSIAN GARDENS: A STRATEGY FOR THEIR SURVIVAL £4 (£3. 20)Coincided with the V&A exhibition "The Garden " in
May 1979. It examined the need for protection of historic gardens, illustrating
some famous gardens which have been lost and putting forward proposals
for tackling the problems of maintaining great gardens.

ENOUGH HAS BEEN BULLDOZED! SAVE FARNBOROUGH, THE CRADLE OF BRITISH AVIATION £5 (£4)A lightning publication from SAVE, with the aim of raising awareness of the importance of Farnborough to the nation's history. It looks at the remarkable collection of buildings that make up what remains of the former Royal Aircraft Establishment site at Farnborough and suggests new uses for the buildings and the site.
Published December 2001/January 2002.

ideas of how to re-use farm buildings no longer required by modern farming.
As well as giving guidelines as to how to convert sensitively, the book

the construction of new offices for central and local government.

GRAND IDEAS FOR THE NATION'S HERITAGE £3 (£2.40)Published to mark SAVE's 25th anniversary, this report sets out a blueprint for future conservation policy in the UK. It contains 25 initiatives aimed at strengthening protection, improving and broadening education and encouraging regular maintenance and swift repair, rather than last ditch rescue, as the most sustainable conservation strategy. THE GUILDHALL TESTIMONIAL £5 (£4 A report highlighting the threat to the interiors of Middlesex Guildhall, the best secular gothic revival building
in the UK, posed by the plans for the UK Supreme Court. The report contains a series of testimonials about the Guildhall
from academics, campaigners and members of the judiciary.

MIND OVER MATTER £12. 95 (£10. 36)The first comprehensive study to look at the position
of Britain's mental hospitals. These attractive and imposing Victorian
buildings, carefully designed with extensive landscaped grounds, are now
facing an uncertain future. By the year 2000AD, 98 out of a total of 121
large mental hospitals (open in 1986) will have closed. The report illustrates
112 cases and calls for proper planning regulations to be brought in to
prevent the loss of both buildings and grounds to over-development. Published
October 1995.

MR LAWSON, YOU HAVE DAMNED OUR BEST HOPES FOR BRITAIN'S HISTORIC BUILDINGS £1 (80p)Lightning leaflet on the implications of the VAT changes
proposed in the 1984 budget. The proposals were modified as a result of
numerous representations and for the first time some concessions were made
for listed buildings.

SILENCE IN COURT - The Future of the UK's Historic Law Courts
SAVE's long awaited book on historic law courts is finally in print, with over 170 photographs, many previously unpublished, of the UK's historic courts - a remarkable group of buildings.
The report looks at the problems faced by the buildings across the UK (with the PFI route of procurement being at the fore), as well as at those that have been successfully refurbished to meet modern expectations.

in November 1983 as part of SAVE's campaign. Calke has since been acquired
by the National Trust.
