Builders rubbish: an unexpected source of funds

Greater financial commitment is needed to conservation. There has been a marked fall in conservation spending in real terms; for example, English Heritage's annual grant from central government has fallen by almost 10% (£11M) in real terms in the last seven years. One important new source of funds is the landfill tax credit scheme, for which environmental projects qualify. Non-profit organisations can benefit from sometimes considerable capital grants towards individual rescue and restoration projects. Some building preservation trusts have been quick to take up the initiative and the National Trust has completed a scheme at Greys Court in Oxfordshire part funded in this way, but whilst many organisations in nature conservation are already reaping extensive rewards, building conservation has yet to fully capitalise on this major new source of funds. To encourage a wider take up, as a matter of priority county trusts should be established across the country to process applications.
